Adilam

Adilam (IPA: /ɑːdiːlɑːm̩/) (adjective: Adilaman) is the island on which A Place of Honor takes place. Three nations call the island home: Itasik to the North, Kayurong to the East, and Peraki to the West. The southern area of Adilam, the Deadland, is uninhabitable due to the dangerous concentrations of Rot present; a small amount of Three Nations territory bordering it has also been deemed unsafe for habitation.

Geography and Climate

Adilam has an area of roughly 725 km². It is surrounded by the Kasamin Strait to the north, and the Dhira Sea on all other sides. Most of the island is extremely flat, lying only a few dozen meters above sea level. The highest point is a hill located in the center of the island. An unnamed landmass lies north of the island (simply referred to as "North"), though nobody has successfully explored it. It has a tropical rainforest climate with high humidity, abundant rainfall, and temperatures ranging from around 28°C to 36°C. The average annual rainfall is around 2400mm, and floods are somewhat common, particularly in the monsoon seasons. Generally, there is slightly more rainfall on the western side of the island than on he east; conversely, temperatures in eastern Adilam are slightly higher. There are two monsoon seasons lasting for around 2-3 months, occurring at the middle and end of the year. The latter monsoon season brings heavier rainfall than the former. The Kin are the only sapient beings on Adilam, but it plays host to various other wildlife, some heavily mutated by Rot.

The island is covered in gargantuan ruins built by beings who lived there before the Rekindling. Most of the buildings that survived the Rekindling have collapsed (or severely degraded in structural integrity) due to lack of maintenance, though it is speculated that the background presence of Rot both preserves and mutates the remaining structures. The severity of the damage increases as one travels south. Almost no buildings are left standing in southern Adilam, save for those that have been warped by the Rot into bizarre structures.
